South Indian food is one of the world's great vegetarian cuisines — yet it remains underrepresented on London's restaurant scene. At Sagar, we've been championing authentic South Indian cooking since 2001, introducing Londoners to the bold flavours, wholesome ingredients, and rich culinary traditions of South India. Here's your guide to the dishes you'll find on our menu.
Dosa: The South Indian Crepe
The dosa is perhaps the most iconic South Indian dish. Made from a fermented batter of rice and lentils, it is cooked on a hot griddle until golden and crispy. The classic Masala Dosa is filled with a spiced potato mixture and served with coconut chutney and sambar — a tangy lentil soup. At Sagar, we offer several varieties including Plain Dosa, Onion Dosa, Rava Dosa, and Paper Dosa.
Idli: The Steamed Rice Cake
Idlis are soft, pillowy steamed cakes made from the same fermented rice and lentil batter as dosas. They are naturally gluten-free, low in calories, and incredibly light — making them a popular breakfast dish across South India. Served with sambar and chutney, they are a comforting and nourishing start to any meal.
Thali: The Complete South Indian Meal
A thali is a full meal served on a single large plate or tray. A South Indian thali typically includes rice, dal (lentil curry), one or two vegetable curries, rasam (a thin spiced soup), yoghurt, pickle, and papad. It is the most complete way to experience the range of flavours in South Indian cooking, and represents exceptional value.
Vada: The South Indian Fritter
Vadas are crispy, ring-shaped fritters made from ground lentils, seasoned with cumin, black pepper, curry leaves, and green chilli. They have a crunchy exterior and a soft, airy centre. Served alongside sambar and chutney, they make for a wonderful starter or snack.
Is South Indian Food Always Vegetarian?
Traditionally, Udupi-style South Indian cuisine is entirely vegetarian, rooted in the Hindu temple town of Udupi in Karnataka. At Sagar, we honour this tradition — our entire menu is vegetarian, with a large proportion of dishes being fully vegan. This makes us one of the best options in London for vegan Indian food, plant-based diners, and anyone avoiding meat.
Come and explore the full menu at any of our five London locations: Covent Garden, West End, Leicester Square, Hammersmith, and Harrow. We'd love to introduce you to the food we're passionate about.
